History of the Book |
-The class is designed to expose students to the progression of book form, content, decoration and use throughout history. Exposure to non-Western books will be included.
-Students will gain exposure to some of the basic materials and techniques used in the production of books. Some hands-on experiences are scheduled.
- A field trip to the University of Iowa Center of the Book will provide experiences with experts working in various fields of book research, scholarship and production.
-Through library and web research and through writing a paper, students will have an opportunity to delve more deeply into selected book topics. Peer evaluation will be included as a part of the research experience.
-The future of the book and the book's connection to electronic communication will be considered. To this end the class will employ a web site for study and exchange of information.
