  • moist parcels lifted sufficiently high to cool to dew point creating shallow cumulus clouds

  • entrainment of dry air acts against cloud development

  • additional convection moistens the path, the cumulus cloud grows in height

  • significant condensation releases enormous latent heat, powering the developing updraft

  • cumulus cloud reaches an altitude where temperatures are significantly below zero (-15 degrees C or less), developing a mixed region of the cloud
